In The Press

The way JoAnn Spehr sees it, lampshades are just hats for different heads.

The owner of Studio Lampshades, at Hyde Park, has always been creative; she studied interior decorating at Marleston TAFE, was considering millenary and fell into making lampshades. Her shades - akin to works of art - can be seen in homes throughout Adelaide and in restaurants, bars, shops and even on film sets and at corporate events. She makes and recovers shades out of just about any material - faux fur, sari silk, Japanese washi paper, parchment papers, linen, synthetic suedes, and patterned felts. "Trimmings range from anything and everything, feathers, beads, leather, suede, mettalic tassles, cord, rope, flowers. Every lamp is different, even a traditional style shade can be made modern depending on the proportions, the fabric, the way the material's used and the trims. I will try to source almost anything, people come in with a picture in a magazine and ask me to find the base and make the shade."

Her photo board is lined with lamps of all shapes, styles and sizes and every one has a story. The countless thank you letters and photos snapped by happy clients of their treasured lamps show just how her work is appreciated. "I like the whole process from the design to the making, it's creating something out of nothing, its making something old look as good as new but it's also the people I meet." Joann has swatches of fabrics in her studio, a few bases and can source anything, she is also happy to make home visits.
